Exercise to a Healthier Pregnancy, Healthier Life

Let’s face it: Pregnancy and childbirth are no stroll in the park. But studies show they could be a lot easier if you took a walk in the park on a regular basis.

Researchers at the University of Michigan have shown that women who exercised three or more times a week before and after pregnancy experienced a smoother labor and delivery and were better able to lose weight after pregnancy than those who didn’t exercise. Which, if you think about it, makes perfect sense.

Muscles that are toned perform better than those that are not, and childbirth definitely calls upon some muscle power and flexibility. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends mild to moderate exercise for about 30 minutes three or more times a week during pregnancy.

Of course, exercising three or more times a week for 30 minutes is a terrific goal for anyone – not just pregnant women. And it’s a whole lot easier to keep up such a regimen if you start before you get pregnant. In fact, researchers have found that this is also the same amount of exercise that helps prevent the development of type 2 diabetes, which is associated with excess weight gain.

Studies have shown that women who exercise on a regular basis before, during, and after pregnancy feel better about themselves, too. But that doesn’t mean you should jump into an aggressive exercise plan just because you get pregnant. Like anything else in life, you need to use common sense. Start small and work your way up. Set reasonable goals. And consult your doctor if you’re not already an active person so that you are sure to set goals that are healthy and within reach.

Walking and swimming are terrific exercise for pregnant women – and anyone else who wants to get and stay fit. Many recreation centers and gyms offer special classes for pregnant women. But if you’re not the type to go to a gym regularly – just go take that walk in the park. It’s worth every step you take.
