Evangelicals Back Film

Those concerned about global warming are gaining support from new quarters these days: Evangelical Christians.

The traditionally conservative and Republican-voting group has taken up climate change as a moral and spiritual issue, arguing that taking a pro-life stance also means protecting the lives of children after they are born by protecting the planet they live on. Many hope they will be able to convince conservative lawmakers – long reluctant to take steps to reduce global warming – to listen and take action.

Faith groups are spreading the word by promoting a documentary on global warming, “The Great Warming,” that is narrated by Keanu Reeves and Alanis Morisssette. It has been screened by members of the National Council of Churches, Presbyterians for Restoring Creation, the National Association of Evangelicals and other religious groups. The campaign also includes themed sermons that preach a moral obligation to protect the planet from warming.

The issue of global warming has gained increasing attention in recent years, as studies show substantially greater impacts, such as the melting of the polar ice caps. Scientists believe we must dramatically reduce carbon dioxide emissions within the next 10 years or risk permanent consequences from climate change.
