Plastic Phobia
As more people become aware of the dangers some soft plastic products to our children, sales of glass products are increasing and sales of plastic are on the decline.
Plastic sales recently plummeted in South Korea following a two-day special broadcast on the presence of environmental hormones, which can cause early puberty, genital abnormalities (when unborn children are exposed) and other health problems.
The problems arise from exposure to environmental hormones known as phthalates, which are used in soft plastic baby bottles and toys as well as plastic food containers. People are also exposed through detergents, perfumes and cosmetics, and a variety of other products. Children and pregnant women or nursing mothers are particularly vulnerable to exposure.
Scientists recommend reducing the use of plastics when possible and replacing them with safer alternatives, such as glass plates and bowls for microwaving food. South Korea and the European Union have banned the use of phthalates in toys and they have also been banned from use in cling wraps.
