Earth Day
This Earth Day, why not show your commitment to the planet by taking some time to review your personal consumption patterns and ways in which you can improve your family’s efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle?
No matter how conscientious or well-intentioned we may be, nearly all of us could reduce the amount of energy we waste. There are so many simple steps we can take (e.g. replacing regular light bulbs with energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs) to cut back on the amount of energy we use, and therefore reduce our impact upon the planet.
Admittedly, the problems facing our planet can feel overwhelming: Reports of rapidly increasing global warming sound ominous, and indeed should be taken seriously. But what many people don’t realize is that individuals truly CAN make a difference. If every household in the United States replaced just one lightbulb with a compact fluorescent bulb, for example, it would prevent more than 13 billion pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. That’s the equivalent of taking more than a million cars off the road for a whole year. Little things do matter.
So this Earth Day, why not take a walk through your home and a mental walk through your day to find at least three things you could do to reduce your consumption. Do you turn off the lights when you leave a room? Do you unplug appliances and electronics that are not in use? Do you make the most of natural lighting? Do you use energy-efficient appliances? Do you combine errands or walk to the store, the pool, the school, whenever possible? Do you carpool? Do you recycle?
If nothing else, surely you can change at least one light bulb!
